Homemade Baby Food

Yeah, finally making my own baby food! Why did I wait so long? I waited and used pre-made baby food because the cross contamination risk them was very very low and theirs is already smooth while doing that is harder for me. Now that Baby B shows no allergies to anything, have not given her peanuts, I have started to make my own.

I have a Kitchenaid Mixer and the Food Grinder attachment which makes this process 100% easier! I use ice cube trays to freeze the food and than bag it in to freezer bags once the food is completely frozen. This makes it easy to grab and thaw at food times and to pack for daycare in the mornings. I also try to mix foods together that Baby B will encounter later in life and get her started on those.

Some of the combinations I’ve done are-
Beef and Potatoes
Carrots, Chicken, and Sweet Potato
Blueberries, Pear, Kiwi, with Wheat
Chicken, Celery, and Carrots
Chicken, Tomato, Avocado, and Asparagus
Chicken and Avocado
Beef, Celery, Wheat, and Carrots
Beef, Broccoli, and Carrots
Hamburger- Ground beef, Onion, Cheese, and Wheat
Kiwi, Strawberry, Blueberry, Orange, and Mint

I like making her food for her. I don’t love the time it takes to make the food, so I do big batches and just freeze it so I can go two weeks or more in between cooking. It’s also less expensive than buying jarred foods. I could spend ~$12 for 7 double containers of Gerber food to get me through ~14 feedings.  I could also spend approximately haft that for the same amount of fresh veggies and set a side a chicken breast from a dinner. Why not save money? Sure, you could argue that the Kitchenaid makes up for that difference but I use it for way more than baby food; Burgers and Ground Beef! Also, on the weeks that I know I need to make Baby Food I look at what veggies are on sale and purchase those ones and work with those.

My staples are:
Carrots
Avocado
Celery
Potatoes

These ones are either almost always on sales, already need for dinners, and healthy. I also use a veggie or two that I have to buy anyways for dinners so its not a real lose. Fruits are a little harder. Since they aren’t on sale a lot in winter I tend to spend a little more on them. I also pull from my frozen fruit stash (berries mostly) and mix that with an peeled apple or pear and grain source and call it good.

I cook my veggies to a tender state and than grind them. It makes them easier to grind and handle but you probable don’t have to. I over cook my meats just to make sure that they are cooked all the way through and not under cooked. There are a few things that I do flat out purchase.

Yogurt Bites– I buy the Kroger brand because of cost and inability to make these at home. They are freeze dried, very different than frozen, yogurt product that Baby B loves; and Geordi el Beagle also. If I had the $4k to drop on a home freeze dryer I might. But I don’t, so I buy them.

Little Munchers– Baby Cheetos!! I swear they smell just like Cheetos. Baby B loves these and they are easy to pack in the diaper bag for snacks on the go and when we adults take her with us eating out.

Arrowroot Cookies– It keeps Baby B occupied and happy and isn’t horrible for her. It’s just messy as the cookie falls apart as it gets gummed; by design to prevent chocking. The Pups like these also and Geordi will clean her fingers off if she lets him.

Veggie Straws– Quick, healthy, and easy for gumming. They are also another easy to pack in the diaper bag for trips and outings. Geordi also knows the sound of this bag and comes running to sit at the highchair and wait for his portion from Baby B.

I like making her food as it is easy to do. I also let her chew on carrot and celery sticks when I have them cut up.

Enjoy!
