2016 Garden Round 2

Grump! So Hubby and I were walking through the local Garden Center and I stopped at the irrigation supplies and we got to talking and he said he could put one in pretty easily; yeah!

Well, not so simple it turns out. My Engineer of a Hubby requested that I look at the water needs for this years beds and let him know so he can put the right flow into the bed. Okay, simple enough to go look it up but it turns out that my plants that I had in the same bed needed different water needs. See, not so yeah. I had two options, 1) leave them as they are and under water some plants and over water others or 2) redesign the beds. So guess what? I resigned the beds.

It was by no means and easy process! Companion planting is far easier when you don’t care about the water needs of the plants. But when you look at the water needs of the plants it gets a lot harder.

Original I had my beds looking like this-
round 1Strawberries, Lettuce, Cucumber

Corn, Onion, Winter Squash, Summer Squash

Pepper, Onion

Broccoli, Onion, Tomato, Garlic

Carrot, Potato, Radish

With the Changes it looks like this now-

Round 2

Strawberry, Winter Squash, Cucumber, Summer Squash

Corn, Potato, Lettuce, Carrot

Broccoli, Winter Squash, Summer Squash

Pepper, Tomato

Onion, Garlic, Radish

No, it’s not perfect. To make it perfect would be to rewrite the entire plan and the entire garden and as I have already started my seedlings, that wasn’t such an option this year.

Maybe next year I can make it work a little better but this year, I am just hoping to plant without having to rework it all over again!

Site that I found helpful in this process:
Almanca Water Guide– I loved that they had all the main crops listed. You can also search the site for other plants and get the water needs under the Care tab.

Enjoy!
