His Week Her Week, Menu Planning

I have rolled out a new weekly menu format. I am calling it, for the moment, His Week Her Week. Basically, we each get a week to cook what we want. In theory the other person doesn’t get to complain or provide undue influence on the others menu; we’ll see how that goes.

Hubby’s Review:
He loved it at first. He got to dictate the menu and I couldn’t argue over it, without being a hypocrite, on how many days in a row we eat burger; one of my least favorite foods. When we got to the second time it was his week he wasn’t so thrilled with it. He’s not so in Love with it being a full week that he has to cook and plan and tell me what to get; I still do the shopping. He would rather have direct input on the schedule without the full responsibility of it.

My Review:
I liked it. I liked taking a step back and watching him try and do it. He did fine with it, we eat pizza and burgers a lot that week, but he didn’t enjoy it. So probable moving forward it will be a little more evenly split during the week or a talked out menu vs a dictation.

How do you plan your menus for the upcoming week?

Now the Actual Menu was fun to design! I did the layout in, basically, Excel, actually in Libre Office. I hand drew the fun little art onto it because Libre doesn’t do clip art and I couldn’t find any that I really liked online; I know right! On it all, the basic categories are covered. I covered them not because we are that healthy but to try and get there its a nice in your face reminder to think about all these areas as you mean plan.

I have a box for:
Proteins: In that box goes what the protein source is (burgers, salmon, tacos, etc). Its more used as the menu dish spot than the meat source naming spot. It could have been called Main Dish.

Vegetables: This is the spot where the veggie goes 🙂 Typically right now we are eating a lot of ceasar salad and corn. In a few months it will be back to broccoli. This box could all be Side Dish.

Grains: What type of grain are we eating with this meal, if any. In it goes breads and rice mostly. If you really wanted to split hairs you could put potato based dishes in the box.

Fruits: Sometimes we eat fruit with dinner. I know, it’s not the usual thing but who cares.

Sweets: This box could also be called Dessert 🙂 No, we don’t eat sweets every night but if we have something we want to do that night it goes there.

Shopping List: Pretty self explanatory.
