Work Place Snack Drawer

Yep I have a work place snack drawer 🙂 Here’s a photo of what is currently in my drawer!

So is the photo the average or staged you maybe asking and here is the answer… It’s the Average! But where is the chocolate? I am going to share my break down of what and why things are or are not in my drawer.

The Oatmeal: Yes, I am one of the those people that loves Oatmeal! Sure, Brown Sugar and Maple might not be the healthiest choice for Oatmeal but Oatmeal its self tends to be healthy. So why is it in there? Because I don’t always eat breakfast before leaving my house in the mornings, sometimes I forget my lunch 😦 , and sometimes I just need a snack to get me to my lunch hour. Oatmeal has 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, and yes 34 grams of Carbs (12 of them Sugar) in only 160 calories. Sure, the carbs maybe make it less healthy for some but all in all a packet of Donuts is going to be much more unhealthy!

The Tea and the Coffee: I love Tea!! I grew up on tea parties with goodies and my  love of Tea has just stuck around. It’s also a healthy way to get water for me because I don’t sugar my tea, yes I drink it black. The K-cups is because the work coffee is less then amazing and we have a K-Cup coffee maker available to everyone!

The Chips: This is less then common thing for me to have. I was craving them the other day so at lunch I went and grabbed some. They are the Terra Sweet Potato Chips though so not overly unhealthy. Unlike the Salt n’ Vinegar ones that I love too! I love these chips and most people don’t which means I don’t have to share them 😀

So what do I almost NEVER have in my drawer?

CANDY and COOKIES: I sit all day at a desk, need I say more?? Plus, we have a vending machine downstairs so if I really want candy and have cash I can get some.

PROTEIN and Such BARS: Sure, if you just read the pretty ads, the wrapper you might think they are healthy. They aren’t really all that healthy though. Yes, the nutrition facts for a Chocolate Peanut Butter Balance Bar may say 14g of protein and 200 calories but if you look closer you will see that they have 7g of fat and  22g of carbs (17 of them sugar). But read the ingredients list and it becomes a little more questionable with the number one ingredient being Protein Blend and then the number two ingredient being Sugar. A handful of nuts is healthier to eat.

But what about the Nature Valley bar box? They fall somewhere between healthy and unhealthy. I love the crunch and chew factor to them. The bitting and chewing helps my brain and body feel fuller which helps stave off hunger. They also are not horrible nutritious either. In both bars in one package you are looking at 190 calories, 28g of Carbs (11 of the sugar) and 5 grams of protein and the number one ingredient is Whole Grain Oats and the number two being Sugar.
