I didn’t ever want a Beagle

I never wanted a Beagle. My Hubby has always wanted a Beagle so a few years ago when we put his dog down (she was 16 and had a brain tumor but we both loved her!) we got a Beagle. He was 7 weeks old and already had an adventure wound (he tried to go under a barbwire fence and got a cut on his back). Thank the Doggy Gods that Hubby was right and I was wrong!! I can’t imagine my life without my Beagle Boy!

What the heck did you bring home?

What the heck did you bring home?

He’s grown up to not be your standard Beagle. Sure, he has Beagle traits but he doesn’t behave like your average textbook Beagle. Yes, he baes at the squirrels, strangers coming to the door, and if you take to long to let him in. However, he is off leash trained and goes regularly to unleashed and unfenced dog park and he has Never given me problems their! His Come on command is almost better then the Goldens and other Labs there and he hardly ever goes more then 20 feet from me. He also doesn’t wear and has never worn a shock collar at the dog park; unlike many of the other Beagles that I see there. He’s also VERY food motivated and thank goodness our counters are way above his nose! His motivation for food has played just as big a role as him motivation to please you has for training him. It’s also caused really funny moments in our house!

Mom, what are you doing way other there?

Mom, what are you doing way other there?

I wasn’t suppose to train him either 🙂 The agreement that I had with my Hubby before we got him was that He (Hubby) was going to be responsible for training him. Ha Ha Ha!! It lasted through Puppy class and even then I had to stop going because Geordi wanted away from Hubby and back to my lap on the stands. They made it through and it was great for them! I took him through the next two courses and have done all the major training since. It’s not because Hubby wasn’t capable of doing it but he didn’t Love doing it like I do and it showed. So, I just took over and did what I love to do. The dog trainer that I use teaches not just the basics but also really advanced things; she isn’t your Petco dog trainer. She actually not only teaches but also judges Schutzhund which is canine guard dog techniques. Geordi and I did so well in basic training (heal, come, stay, down, ect) that we got invited by her to become one of the first Beagles in a few years to take the advanced course (All OFF leash). So, not only is his obedient but he does it so very consistently that he gets great rewards from it 🙂 He’s also a lover.

I’ve never meet a dog or even a cat that cuddles like he does. As I type this on the sofa (thank goodness for laptops) he is snuggled into my side and would just be in canine heaven if I let him snuggle under the blanket. He just loves to be near his people and will whine and cry if he thinks he’s been outside to long while we are inside. He also doesn’t play with people because he doesn’t want to hurt them. On the few occasions where he has ever placed his teeth on me (typically overly excited for the treat) I’ve told him Ow. He’s stopped trying for the treat, dropped his years, made eye contact, and licked the spot in questions. Of course, I forgave him right away because he did just what I expected him to do. He also has a HUGE child radar. He LOVES kids!! I have seen him stand 5 feet from a kid that he just wanted to say Hi to but because he, Geordi, was so hyper he didn’t want to get close to the kid because he didn’t want to hurt them. On those occasions if I have was able to be with him and escort him to the kid he went willingly, sat on command, and let the kid pat him. I’ve also seen him lick a proffered sandwich bite out of a kids hands. Remember, he only turned 2 this year and this is the way he’s been since we got him! Yes, he has a stubborn streak, he loves food, has a voice, and uses his big brown eyes against you. He’s also obedient, easily trained, and a lover. So yes, he is the most un-Beagle Beagle you will see but also the best Beagle I’ve seen in public. Every time we go to the Dog Park he impresses and wins over someone new 🙂

He loves to cuddle and the closer the better for him.

He loves to cuddle and the closer the better for him.

The lesson to be learned in this story I guess would be this: Don’t let the breed and it’s average fool you. If you are willing to spend the HOURS (I’ve easily spent over 120 hours actively training him and reinforce the trained skills every day!) on training, have a stubborn streak bigger then theirs, and are open to letting them place paw prints on your heart and soul then they are a great breed and a wonderful family dog.

Hug your pets and enjoy!
