She needed to run. Alana had always been an active person. She had been riding since she could sit up on her own; she had played sports in boarding school, and swam whenever she got the chance. But running was her favorite thing in the world. The thud of every stride she took every breath she brought into her lungs, the strain of muscle as she pushed harder and harder. All of it was her own private symphony and she ached to hear it again. Being cooped in the house was slowly killing her. She had never liked being confined by boundaries set by others.

Leaning her hip against the railing of her bedroom porch Alana watched as the haziness of predawn gave way to full dawn. The purples gave way to the oranges and yellows. The birds picked up their heads and heralded the dawn with their morning songs. Screw the boundaries set by this team of protectors. She was going running and she was going now. Standing straight Alana walked back into her bedroom and crossed to her bathroom, and walk in closet. Grabbing her running clothes Alana slipped out of her PJ’s and caught her image in the mirror. Looking at her reflection she poked her tummy and thought she saw a little fat forming around it. With a smile she shrugged it off. It was the price to pay for good food from Cook; she would just to do more sit ups. She pulled on her running clothes and sighed with content.

She glanced outside her door. For once there wasn’t a guard standing outside it. Guess they didn’t know that she got so early every day to watch the sunrise and contemplate that days adventure. Slipping out of her room she padded quietly down the stairs peaking every once in a while to see if anyone was about. Being confident that no one was there to see her escape the house, she sneaked through the dinning room and out onto the porch. Having stretched in her room Alana walked to the edge of the porch, picked her path, and took off at a dead run.

Alana run past the pool, across the bricked outdoor patio, and onto the green expanse of lawn, her heart beat fast and her feet pounded the ground. Her pace was faster then her steady norm, but with the need to run Alana didn’t care. Her muscles ached from sitting idle for so long. By the time Alana entered the forested path they had stopped aching and she was on her way to an endorphin high. She slowed her pace to her normal speed and revealed in the quiet of the forest. The birds had stopped signing except for every once in while, the cool air felt good against the heat of her body, nothing could ever come close to this place when it came to running.

As Alana ran through the forest she reflected on all the places she had run through. The fog of Ireland and Scotland came close, Maine in fall was even closer, but nothing was like running at home. Maybe it was the comfort of the trails here. She didn’t have to think about where she was going, where her feet were landing, or how far she was from her start point. All those things were ingrained into her body, just like where the squeaky boards in the house were. With the freedom to run Alana also took the time to contemplate what was happening in her life.

Once again, this is my store and whole my story. No parts may be reproduced without my specific written permission. This is also a fictional story and those named in it, are nothing by my imagination.  Hope you enjoyed it!
